BUILDING COMMUNITY THROUGH MUSIC

CAT'S IN THE CRADLE (AND OTHER TRUE STORIES) [Grades 6-8, 9-12]

Music has a magical way of bringing people together, and musical stories have the power to move people to change their perceptions of themselves and their world. This interactive concert experience is designed to encourage participation, build a stronger sense of community, and provide moments of reflection, insight and humor.                                                                                "Excellent, excellent, excellent! I can't tell you how much I enjoyed John's show! Invite him back."

ART: AN ALTERNATIVE TO SUBSTANCE ABUSE AND VIOLENCE [Grs. 6-12]

Creative expression provides a wonderful outlet for the pent-up frustrations and pain that often lead to hurtful behavior.  Songwriting is an especially effective channel, combining lyrical/linguistic value with the purely emotional release available through music. We'll explore examples of this phenomenon through popular contemporary recordings, and glimpses into this artists own creative process.

PREPPIES, FREAKS, WANNABEES AND GEEKS [Grs. 6-8, 9-12]

Traditionally, school communities have been factionalized, fragmented, and hard to unite. One obvious roadblock to unity is the widespread use of labels that separate and isolate student groups. This lively session examines some of the labels that describe subgroups in our schools, some of the reasons for those subgroupings, and some strategies for bringing people together.                 "Super! He involves everyone and keeps your attention. That's a good skill."
